A week of remembrance for a fallen Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy will begin Monday with a dignified escort from Dallas to Canton.
Deputy Adam Sherifi, 31, was shot and killed in the line of duty last Tuesday while attempting to serve felony warrants.
On Monday, Oct. 26, Sherifi’s body will be transported from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office to Eubank Funeral Home in Canton, where the community will have an opportunity to pay its respects.
According to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, the dignified escort is scheduled to depart the medical examiner’s office at 2355 N. Stemmons Freeway in Dallas at approximately 10 a.m.
The escort will travel along Interstate 35, Interstate 45, U.S. Highway 175, Interstate 20 and State Highway 64 before arriving at Eubank Funeral Home.
“We encourage our community members, first responders, and supporters of law enforcement to line the roadways and overpasses along the route as we bring Deputy Sherifi home,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Due to the limited number of vehicles permitted in the escort, officials are asking area fire departments and other first responders to consider positioning personnel and emergency vehicles along overpasses to show their support.
Sherifi, a father of two, was killed when investigators say a suspect opened fire from inside a home while the deputy and a Canton police officer were attempting to serve felony warrants.
According to investigators, the suspect was armed with a semiautomatic rifle and fired approximately 800 rounds during the shooting.
Canton police Officer Chris Watson was also wounded in the gunfire, suffering a gunshot wound to his right arm. Watson has since been released from the hospital but is expected to undergo another surgery as he continues his recovery.
In the days following the shooting, the Van Zandt County community has rallied around the families of both officers.
“There’s nothing anyone can say that will make this any easier,” one community member said. “What we can do is stand beside these families, give them our love and support, and make certain they never have to grieve alone.”
Sherifi’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Canton, where community members have been invited to gather and honor his life and service.
The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support following the deputy’s death.
“Your presence, prayers, and support mean more than words can express during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.
